VLC Media Player Portable est une solution complète pour la lecture et la diffusion de vidéo par réseau, développée par des étudiants de l'École centrale Paris et des développeurs du monde entier, sous licence GNU General Public License (GPL).

VideoLAN est conçu pour diffuser des vidéos MPEG sur des réseaux haut débit. VideoLAN a été historiquement conçu pour la diffusion sur réseau. Cependant, le principal logiciel du projet, VLC media player, est devenu un lecteur multimédia tout-en-un multiplateforme.

L'avantage de ce lecteur est qu'il ne nécessite pas l'installation de codecs. Il est en mesure de lire un nombre considérable de formats audio (MP3, APE, AAC, OGG, MPEG-4 ALS, Vorbis 6.1/7.1, FLAC 6.1/7.1 et autres) et vidéo (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-4 lossless, DivX, Flash, Dirac, Atrac3, H.264 PAFF, APE audio, RealVideo, VC-1, VC-3, Fraps, AES3, Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, Blu-Ray Linear PCM, Real Video 3.0 et 4.0, VP8, WebM et autres), de façon totalement autonome. Ce logiciel peut s'utiliser soit comme un simple lecteur à la fois léger et puissant, soit, en liaison avec la partie "serveur" du logiciel, pour lire des vidéos diffusées sur un réseau local en streaming.
